I saw the new gangster/horror/action/period piece, "Sinners" starring Michael B. Jordan & Michael B. Jordan! By the way, this is the 5th time Michael B. Jordan has been featured in director Ryan Coogler's films.
"Sinners" takes place over the course of one fateful day & night back in October of 1932! Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers who are back in the Mississippi Delta after working for Al Capone. They want to use the money they've stolen from gangsters to open their own "juke joint", They buy a place from a former racist Klansman and they join forces with their young cousin (much to the dismay of his preacher father) played by R&B singer, Miles Caton and other community members to open the joint at night! Of course at night the vampires lurk outside the new juke joint and threaten to wreak havoc because they're hungry!
"Sinners" boasts an amazing soundtrack (even featuring the legendary Buddy Guy), stunning cinematography and decent performances but alas, Ryan Coogler throws in WAY TOO MANY subplots that bog the movie down. At a running time of 137 minutes, the film feels like a 3 hour film. It seems like a great deal of filmmakers feel like they have to over complicate their films these days. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like here! I just wish that Ryan executed it better. The film's heart doesn't show up until the mid-credit scene at the end! Yes! You have to stay until after the credits role as there is a post credits scene as well!
