Drew Hancock's feature length film debut, "Companion" is truly the first half-way decent and original film of 2025.
Yes, the plot is familiar: A seemingly happy couple on vacation with friends at a remote cabin. The seams of their relationships slowly become revealed and unraveled. The film is a sci-fi, horror, satire with echoes of "The Stepford Wives", "Ex Machina", the TV series, "Black Mirror" and even the film "Her". The film has themes of abuse, being in toxic relationships and to me what it means to be a human being. A.I. is something that is controversial and is being used more & more! The overall message to me is how dangerous A.I. can potentially be!
The film overall is above average. At 97 minutes though, the film does seem to be 15-20 minutes too long. There are forced plots which I won't get into here and some of the pay-offs and executions are not 100% successful. Drew Hancock though has crafted an above average debut and will look forward to seeing where he goes from here.
